Medieval castles are unique in most ways. Far more interesting are the Crusader castles in and around the Levant. They were designed in such a way to deal with multiple invasions to hold off sieges until aid could arrive. The Templars and Hospitallers were talented in choosing out strategic designs and mostly the Kings or Lords would consult with them to supervise the constructions.
When Prince Edward was on Crusade, he developed castles similar in his kingdom in England and Wales bearing a lot of strategic importance. Likewise Richard the Lionheart developed Chateau Gaillard in Normandy which he had invested heavy funds to raise. Sadly his slow learning brother John, lost it to the French.

Wow, I've heard a lot about the Templars. But I never knew about the castles they designed. Guess I haven't heard everything, eh?
